Veteran's Day at Foothill Oaks Academy
In an effort to help students grow to become caring and appreciative citizens, we feel it is important for them to understand the commitment and sacrifice that has been made over the years by the men and women who have served our country in the military.  Veteran's Day is the perfect time to help teach this lesson, and at Foothill Oaks Academy it is a special time of reflection and appreciation for our students and their families.  At our Annual Veteran's Day Assembly we are pleased to have in attendance many  veterans representing current FOA families.  What an honor to hear  their stories and songs, and see their personal memorabilia.  FOA students write letters to our current servicemen and women which are presented for mailing during the ceremony. Students also submit the names and information about family members who serve or have served in the military and all these names are read aloud. The most moving part of this remembrance comes when our students meet eyes with our honored guests, shake their hands, and tell them thank you for their service.  Such a close glimpse of history will not soon be forgotten.  The price that many have paid, and continue to pay, cannot be measured. Our goal is to help provide a continued awareness that freedom is not free.

Read-a-thon Success
During the 1st Annual Read-a-thon at Foothill Oaks Academy, our students read 194,082 pages and raised over $9000 in sponsorships!  We even had a middle school teacher who "earned" her way to eating lunch on the roof through her  students' commitment to success...and the incentive of seeing their teacher eat lunch on the roof!
D.E.A.R: Drop Everything And Read
In an effort to encourage everyone to participate and see the benefit of daily reading first hand, each school day during the Read-a-thon every single person on the FOA campus stopped at the exact same time to "drop everything and read" for 10 minutes.  All readers kept a log of the pages they read and sponsorships they collected for their efforts.  When it was over, the top reader and fundraiser in each class was rewarded with a limo ride to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour to celebrate!  We even had a few staff members who worked hard to earn their place in the limo as well!  Reading is the cornerstone to learning...what a fun way to reinforce this very important skill!

FOA: Winning Mathletes
In December of 2011, we ventured into new territory and sent a group of 17 middle school students to compete in the annual Bishop Amat Math Competition.  This was the first time participating in a competition like this for most of our students.  It was a chilly, early morning for these mathletes, but the results were definitely worth the effort.  In the end, Foothill Oaks Academy placed 1st in their division, and the 6th graders who participated placed 3rd in the 6th Grade Team category.  We are so proud of their accomplishment!
