D.E.A.R: Drop Everything And Read
From
January 9th to February 6th, 2012, FOA students (and staff!)
are participating in their First Annual Read-a-thon.
In an effort to encourage everyone to participate and see
the benefit of daily reading first hand, each school day
during the Read-a-thon every single person on the FOA campus
stops at the exact same time to "drop everything and read"
for 10 minutes. All readers are keeping a log of the
pages they read and sponsorships they are collecting for
their efforts. When it is all said and done, the top
reader and fundraiser in each class will be rewarded with a
limo ride to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour to celebrate!
We even have a few staff members who are working hard to
earn their place in the limo as well! Reading is the
cornerstone to learning...what a fun way to reinforce this
very important skill!
FOA: Winning Mathletes
In December, we ventured into new
territory and sent a group of 17 middle school students to
compete in the annual Bishop Amat Math Competition.
This was the first time participating in a competition like
this for most of our students. It was a chilly, early
morning for these mathletes, but the results were definitely
worth the effort. In the end, Foothill Oaks Academy
placed 1st in their division, and the 6th graders who
participated placed 3rd in the 6th Grade Team category.
We are so proud of their accomplishment!
Girls Volleyball
Team Goes to League Playoffs
We
are so proud to announce that our girls volleyball team has
qualified for a spot in the Foothill Sports League's
playoffs. The specific dates, times, and locations of
the playoff games will follow soon. Go Lady Falcons!!!
Veteran's Honored at
Foothill Oaks Academy
On
Thursday, November 10th, Foothill Oaks Academy hosted a
Veteran's Day Ceremony honoring those who have courageously
served our country, past and present. The ceremony
opened with the flag salute and the recitation of a poem
about our country's flag, and ended with each student
shaking hands with and saying thank you to the veterans who
honored us with their presence. FOA students also
wrote letters to
our current servicemen and women which were presented for
mailing during the ceremony.
Students submitted the names and
information about family members who serve or have served in
the military. In addition to hearing from some of the veterans
who were in attendance, the submitted names of all the veterans
were read aloud at this memorial.
There was a display of pictures and
uniforms and other personal memorabilia on display for the
FOA students to touch and see. Such a close glimpse of
history will not soon be forgotten by those in attendance. The price that many have paid, and continue to pay, cannot be
measured. Our goal is to help provide a continued awareness
that freedom is not free.
